WordPress has provided many features to set seo friendly urls. We know that url plays major role in search engine optimization. Google & other search engines prefer easy url structure rather than that urls who has lots of numeric and symbolic values. We have to set seo friendly urls so it will be easy for users to remember urls easy and also for search engines.
Setting seo friendly urls
When you install wordpress you don’t know much more about how to set seo friendly urls. For example if your writing a post on link building techniques to rank high in search engine. When you publish articles your url may look like www.urdomainname.com/?p=123. This will be your default url pattern in wordpress. This type of url are not seo friendly & search engine mostly consider seo friendly urls. This type of url pattern will not rank in search engine for your selected keyword for your post. So to change default url to search friendly url. You have to go to login section of your wordpress account. After you login in your wordpress panel go to left hand side of wordpress menu bars and click on settings option. Find & click on permalinks option. On permalink page you will find common settings option like
- Day & name.
- Month & name.
- Post name.
- Custom structure.
1. Default url pattern
The default url pattern would look like http://yourdomain.com/?p=123. This will be you default pattern so you have to change it to seo friendly url.
2. Day & name
Second seo friendly urls pattern is day and name. In this url your post will include url pattern like year, month, date and your title. This type of url is good than normal default url pattern. But they are not much effective. For example If you have written article on link building techniques. Because this url carry year, month, and date search engine will give authority to that article till 2015. But in 2016 its relevancy will be low and will not carry that weight in search engine result pages. Because search engine are looking for fresh data related to that. So the authority and page relevancy will drop in 2016. These type of pattern are effective till some date but we can’t consider that our post will carry same amount of weight in future.
3. Month & name
The third seo friendly urls pattern is month & day. Same as second one (day and name). It will add month and day in your url (permalink). Same as day and name but seo friendly urls pattern is considering being much better than day and name format.
Numeric url pattern shows numbers in url (permalink). In my opinion it does not carry much more weight in search engine. Because the url structure carries numeric value. It is not hard for search engines to understand your url pattern. But search engine will refer those urls which are easy to read for users. In my opinion numeric url pattern is not seo friendly url structure in wordpress.
5. Post name
This is my favorite search engine friendly url pattern. Mostly i have used this pattern for my own blogs. In this title of your content will be set in your url. It is helpful for user to remember url of your post or page. Also this type of urls are considered to be seo friendly urls. Lots of seo experts suggest using post name pattern. In my opinion it is really good url pattern to use.
6. Custom structure
WordPress has also provided custom url pattern. In this you can set custom url structure. But before setting custom pattern checkout expert reviews on setting custom url pattern. If you refer any seo expert they will suggest you right url pattern according to your site. So these were the information about how you can change your url (permalink) & set seo friendly urls to your posts or pages in wordpress site.
7. Important thing to know before changing url structure
If you have already published posts or pages on your wordpress site. Before changing url structure Install redirection plugin. This redirection plugin manages 301 redirection and keep track of 404 error without requiring knowledge of apache or .htaccess files.
Note: Before changing permalink and installing redirection plugin. First copy all urls of pages & post so if any technical problem occurs you are able to restore old urls in your site.
